about

This started off transposing my Hex Acid weave pattern to an acoustic guitar progression. I added some improvised piano and Chris opened it up with bowed guitar and drones. The percussion is made from field recordings of loom samples and me gardening. This feels like the most (post-rock) track on the album, with progressions and peaks. Early on during the mixes it felt like it was missing something, a human connection to the landscape. A voice, Angharad McLaren is my partner and weave collaborator and has a lovely Scottish voice, I asked her to read the texts that Chris wrote about my visual practice and used the recordings to bookend the piece.

lyrics

the surface
formed of coiled shell
and fin-spine

exposed reefs
of hardened time

*

the deer gleam and glitter
and everywhere
eyes of moonlight guide

the weary hours

to the altar of the present

*

ground cascades
rock fountains

*

human art and nature
river the hill approach
the present

in stone
in wood
in thought

*

gritstone escarpment

the edges

veins and rakes

shales friable
frost

blanket mire
featherbed bog

wind flickers
sparse lights of jacob’s-ladder

slow ascent of dissolved hours

*

the shallow hip
rough grazed
the spar veins

*

channel shallow twilight fires

porous fibres
draw up
the shadow

pooling below

*

earth drawn upward
in shivering lines

to soft sprays of sky

*

comfrey and
Andromeda dissolved

in surface

weathered

*

the grace of weighted bodies
solidities transposed
to sky

*

stratified horizons
of bast fibres

*

descents, clefts
depths conferred by sleights of light and shadow

Footed in the sloping field, softened by threads of streaming water. The fixed mists secretly quickened.

*

the condensed light of the hydrous sky
descending by diagonals

*

hand following hidden hand

scribing time
